A hyena to mount up after I finish my five million other taxidermy projects- before I get to this guy I need to finish softening/tanning a bunch of pelts, finish cleaning around 20-30 skulls, and mount up a wolf pedestal, gray fox lifesize, red fox lifesize, coyote lifesize, coyote pedestal, buck shoulder mount, fawn shoulder mount..
Ordered the smallest hyena change out head Mckenzie had, got some boar eyes, and managed to find some pre-made celastic hyena earliners. Need to shrink the form down a few sizes and edit it into a rug shell

Wow, What a great piece to have!  :happybounce:  Can't wait to see it done. Love to see and read that you are going for the closed mouth too.

Oh my gosh-how cool!  A hyena!  I'd love to see pics of his progress.  I'm curious, are you doing him for yourself or a client?

I am glad you are not going to make it all snarly and stuff. I see soo many "snarling" mounts as rugs.. I prefer the plain expressions myself.

yeah, I rarely see hyenas mounted without the snarl and with rugs, if they're not snarling, then their mouth is hanging open with an incredibly spaced out look like they're really high or something. Gonna go for a focused but relaxed expression for this guy, I don't see it too often for rugs or hyenas in general

Yeah I don't understand why you would pay so much for a pelt and to have it taxidermied poorly. It makes me kind of sad..
Yes most rugs I have seen of any animal it's always snarling and it's face is scrunched :/ I've seen a couple nice ones but most often they aren't :(

You got yourself quite a to-do list, my dear! How in the world did you manage to obtain a Hyena pelt? That's so cool.

I got him in December from someone on the taxidermy forums (who also has a dA account, but can't remember the name off hand), who from what I've gathered is a wildlife educator. They had to sell him to pay some bills, and a spotted hyena had been on at the top of my 'holy grail' list for a while, so I contacted them to see if they'd take a short payment plan on him with no real hope they'd accept, but they were actually kind enough to accept and now I have this guy. Its the most I've spent on a single piece, but I don't regret it. Spotted hyenas are incredible animals and their pelts are super interesting!

I wouldn't regret it either! Such a phenomenal specimen!

Would you mind describing the fur's texture to me? I've never felt a hyena or a hyena pelt before. It looks kind of course and short like a lab or something
